Burano Italy – Travel Photography

This post is the first of many from our trip to Italy.  The town of Burano is a hidden gem.  I learned of this location during our layover at JFK on our way to Italy.  I was sitting next to a guy and noticed he had some nice Nikon equipment.  I started some small talk with this gentleman and discovered I was talking with photographer icon Jay Maisel.  Jay is no small name in the photography industry…he has been shooting for over 50 years and has been named a “master of light” and one of the “30 most influential photographers of the decade”.  I couldn’t believe this opportunity.  It was an honor speaking with him.  During our quick chat, he asked where we were going in Italy.  I told him we were going to Venice, it was then he told me of an island which was a couple of hours away by boat (Burano).  He touted it as one of the most beautiful places in the world to photograph.  After my visit, I concur…it is truly an amazing place to visit.  Burano is the most colorful place I’ve ever been.  It was like walking around in a box of crayons.  Every color imaginable was there.

I like these a lot, John. It actually reminds me of Latin America quite a bit — although a tad more modern ;) Latin America is my fave place so I ought to check out Burano.

John your pictures turned out amazing. What a fun and beautiful place to photograph. If I had a place of my own I think I could find a place to hang some pictures like that. Keep shooting away!

Love it John! I particularly love that you accentuated the color vs. muting it like I see so much of lately!

John, these shots are totally amazing! I only hope that one day I can go somewhere like this. Talk about a “pop of color.” I love the first shot of all the boats. Awesome!
