2011–Best Couples Sessions

I understand we are a couple weeks into the new year, but I wanted to reflect back on some of my favorite photos this week.  In the past, I have posted some of my favorite images (Couples 2010, Portraits 2010, Weddings 2010) from the prior year.  This week I plan to post three best of posts (Couples, Portraits, and Weddings).  I love reflecting back on each year and seeing how my photography has evolved.  I think 2011 had a very distinct and consistent look.  I feel I have found my voice and style and am so grateful for clients that book me to capture these special moments.

I never tire of photographing couples for their engagement sessions.  I like my engagement session to be more of an experience than just simply a “to do” checklist item before your wedding day.   The engagement session gives me chance to get to know my couples a bit more and let them get a feel for how I like to direct. The session isn’t just about dressing up in matching polos and khakis and going to a park for some stiff poses and plastic smiles.  I encourage all of my couples to make the session very personal.  I encourage couples to find a location of meaning for them.  I want a setting that reflects the couples style and personality. If you’re city folks, we’re probably not going to photograph the session at a charming old barn and likewise if a couple are nature lovers, I’m not going to photograph you in the middle of the city.

My couples session took me all over the Minnesota and even to Northern Wisconsin.  It’s been a blast and is tough to pick my favorites, but here they are…

Merry Christmas, Sharpe Family!

Emily + Justin…and Ike

Since moving to Rochester earlier this year, Em and I have met some great new friends.  Emily and Justin happen to be some of the great new people we have met here.  They have been nice enough to have us over a couple of times to their home. I randomly met Emily a couple years ago at the airport while traveling home from WPPI.  She had a familiar face and I was about 100% sure I already knew her from somewhere…but I was wrong.

Emily is the talented photographer of Emily Griffith Photography.  We decided a few weeks ago to photograph each other. I jumped at the idea because I’m tired of not having awesome photos of the three of us. As usual, it is always a little intimidating when I photograph another photographer, but it was great! We didn’t have a whole lot of time to shoot because it was getting cold and the sun set sooooo quickly.  Despite the fading light…I think we did all right : )

I love all the pictures. It will be very hard to choose.

I like the first B & W and the first colored photo because your faces are visible and you both look so happy. The picture in the Wild Jerseys and dancing shows your personalities. Dan has his hand in his pocket as he turns Ariel, I love it. You might want to practice your dance moves before the Wedding. You make an adorable couple!

Kristen - November 25, 2011 - 5:54 pm

I like the one of Ariel spinning/dancing! Other favorite include #5 (“Children of the Corn”) and the one of Dan “tackling” Ariel.
